SESSHIN1 (RETREAT)

“The Sesshin is coming back to the essence of our lives. It means to stop for a moment from the crazy ride after a goal or another and to deal exclusively with what is really important. All is impermanent and in continuous change. Nothing stands for ever, especially our life, but despite this truth we often behave like we have all the time in the world. “I kill my time” are the words we often hear when we ask someone “how are you doing?” What an answer! How often we say these words! And how many times we found different escuses to avoid dealing with the fundamental things in our life.

In the sesshin we learn to live consciously. For seven days we concentrate on what is really important. Nembutsu, listening to the teaching, simple food, discipline of mind and body. A life reduced to its essence, simple and natural.”

1 The sesshin is a period of intensive practice after a strict programme in which the followers retreat themselves in the dojo or temple in order to dedicate entirely to the recitation of nembutsu and listening to the teaching.
